The Trichologist's Shortlist 2026: Shampoo

Whilst shampoo is designed to cleanse the hair and scalp, certain ingredients and formulations can be damaging or even catastrophic for hair and scalp health.  The wrong shampoo for your hair type can cause excessive dryness, breakage and scalp irritation.  The problems caused by shampoo are normally cumulative, which means the issues build up over time, and sometimes it's difficult to pinpoint what in your hair care routine is causing the problems.

This shampoo guide is organised by hair type and concern. Each category shortlist is chosen for that specific need, with a clear explanation of why each product made the cut, what ingredients to avoid.

Dry/ damaged hair

Focuses on barrier comfort and fibre protection that leave hair softer and smoother after rinsing.

ACT + ACRE  |  Cold Processed® Daily Hydro Hydrating Shampoo

Verdict

A hydration-leaning, gentle-cleansing shampoo built around a milder surfactant system and scalp comfort-support ingredients, designed to clean without the stripped, tight feeling that often follows stronger detergents. It is silicone-free and includes sodium phytate, which helps in hard water areas where residue can build quickly. This is a fragrance-led formulation and includes high performance film-formers for healthier hair fibre feel.

  • Best for: dry scalp, hair loss support, damaged lengths

  • Fragrance: high

  • Residue risk: moderate

  • Not ideal for: reactive itch, seb derm-prone, heavy build-up routines

AVEDA |  Be Curly Advanced™ Co-Wash

Verdict

A rich, conditioning co-wash for very curly hair designed to cleanse softly while prioritising slip and fibre comfort. The base is built around fatty alcohols and conditioning agents, with mild cleansing support from coco-glucoside.  Perfect for people who find shampoos too stripping or who need more detangling support during wash day.  This formula includes heavier lipids such as kokum butter and baobab oil, which can build up on the scalp, so thorough rinsing with physical agitation to remove all product is neccessary. A fragrance-led formula, with parfum and multiple fragrance allergens listed, which makes it less predictable for easily irritated or inflammation-prone scalps.

  • Best for: damaged lengths, dry hair, low-lather routines, wash-day slip and detangling support
  • Fragrance: high
  • Residue risk: medium
  • Not ideal for: reactive itch, seb derm-prone, heavy build-up routines, oily roots, inflammation-prone scalps

THE STEAM BAR  |  The Scalp Shampoo

Verdict

A very gentle, sulphate-free cleanser base with deep cleaning action and great conditioning and hydration support, The surfactants (sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate, sarcosinate, glucosides and betaine) are compatible with mild cleansing, and the formula includes useful comfort and conditioning components such as glyceryl oleate, inulin, panthenol, sodium PCA and amino acids. The preservative system makes this less suitable for sensitive or easily irritated scalps. Very pleasant smell, highly fragranced.

Best for: Dry hair, brittle hair, breaking hair, low sensitivity scalps that tolerate fragrance

Fragrance: high

Residue risk: moderate

Not ideal for: sensitive and reactive scalp, easily irritated, inflammation-prone, reactive itch, eczema-prone or contact dermatitis history

Colour-treated and chemically processed

This collection includes shampoos that reduce colour fade and cuticle damage, avoiding aggressive cleansing that increases dryness, frizz, and breakage.

AGUSTINUS BADER |  The Shampoo

Verdict

A gentle, scalp-friendly shampoo base, no silicones and no fragrance. The cleansing system is built around isethionate, taurate and glucosides, which typically cleanse effectively without the tight, stripped feel associated with sulphates or olefin sulfonate systems. It also includes multiple comfort-support ingredients, including panthenol, glycerin, erythritol and saccharide isomerate, which can improve scalp feel and reduce post-wash dryness. The formula contains a mix of botanical extracts and peptides, which increases the number of variables for ultra-reactive scalps. Overall, it is as a clean-rinsing, low-irritant mild shampoo that supports a healthy scalp.

  • Best for: coloured hair, sensitive and reactive scalp, dry scalp, damaged hair,
  • Fragrance: low
  • Residue risk: low
  • Not ideal for: people who react to botanical ingredients, very oily roots

Oily roots

For effective cleaning without leaving a coated finish, so roots feel lighter for longer without triggering tightness or rebound irritation.

AESOP  |  Shampoo

Verdict

A gentle, sulphate-free cleanser base with a modern surfactant blend that should clean effectively without a harsh, stripped feel. The formula includes glycerin and panthenol for comfort, plus light conditioning support from guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride.

  • Best for: normal scalp, oily roots that want a gentle cleanse, dry scalp when fragrance is tolerated, damaged lengths needing a milder wash
  • Fragrance: moderate
  • Residue risk: low to moderate
  • Not ideal for: sensitive and reactive scalp, easily irritated or inflammation-prone routines, fragrance-sensitive scalps, reactive itch that flares with essential oils

Itchy and flaky scalp

Prioritises scalp tolerance and a clean rinse, with options that support flake control without relying on harsh detergents for clearance.

MOOGO  |  Flake Free Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

Verdict

A well-formulated, sulphate-free anti-dandruff shampoo built around mild surfactants and two antifungal actives, climbazole and piroctone olamine. The cleansing system is gentle enough for frequent use, and the formula is relatively low-residue, which supports long-term scalp stability in flaking and seb derm-prone routines.  Menthol is included for a cooling, itch-relieving feel, but cooling agents can be less comfortable on very reactive or inflamed scalps and may not suit everyone. Otherwise, this ingredient list aligns well with a barrier-respecting, antifungal-led approach.

  • Best for: flaking scalp, seb derm-prone, sensitive scalps, easily irritated scalps, inflammation-prone, hair loss support routines where scalp stability is a priority
  • Fragrance: low
  • Residue risk: low
  • Not ideal for: menthol-sensitive scalps

Sensitive and reactive scalp

Favouring low fragrance or fragrance-free options and a gentler cleansing system for easily irritated skin.

BRIOGEO  |  Be Gentle, Be Kind Aloe + Oat Milk Shampoo

Verdict

A clean, fragrance-free, scalp-calming shampoo formula built around a modern mild cleanser base with good barrier and comfort support. Sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate and cocamidopropyl betaine create a gentle cleansing system, and the formula includes glycerin, aloe, oat extract, green tea extract and panthenol for scalp comfort. Sodium gluconate provides chelating support, which can help reduce mineral-related residue left on hair and scalp in hard water areas.

  • Best for: sensitive and reactive scalp, easily irritated, inflammation-prone, hair loss support routines, dry scalp, ultra-minimal routines
  • Fragrance: low
  • Residue risk: low
  • Not ideal for: very oily roots that need a stronger reset, heavy styling routines that require frequent deep cleansing

The selection prioritises controlled cleansing that leaves the scalp calm and the roots genuinely clean, without relying on harsh detergents, heavy fragrance, silicone deposition, or high-risk sensitising preservatives that can trigger cumulative dryness, itch, flaking, or coated roots over time. During screening, over 90% of formulas reviewed were excluded because they relied on high-strength detergent systems or non-sulphate substitutes that still cleanse aggressively enough to break down extenal and internal elments of the hair fibre, particularly when used repeatedly.  This significantly limits the sample pool. The shampoos listed here are the ones that best matched the criteria for barrier stability, clean rinse, and routine predictability across common concerns including dryness, irritation, flaking, and hair loss support routines where the scalp environment needs to stay stable.
