Why Hair Loss Can Be the Body’s First Red Flag

Hair might be emotionally important, socially significant and surprisingly good at ruining a perfectly decent morning, but biologically, it is non-essential. The body can function without producing thick, glossy hair, but it cannot afford to neglect the brain, heart, lungs or other vital organs. The Triage Theory, developed by biochemist Dr Bruce Ames, proposes that when nutrients are in limited supply, the body prioritises the processes needed for immediate survival over those involved in long-term maintenance. Much like a hospital responding to an emergency, resources are directed towards the most urgent functions first. Hair growth, despite being highly demanding, sits much further down that priority list.
