How Much Water Do You Need to Drink for Healthy Hair?

Even if you are drinking 8 glasses a day your cells still might be dehydrated. Fluid requirements vary according to body size, activity levels, temperature, diet, illness and medication use. Hydration is not simply determined by how many glasses are consumed each day.
Water allows nutrients, hormones, oxygen and metabolic waste to move between the blood, tissues and hair follicle. It also supports blood volume, circulation and the cellular reactions involved in energy production, tissue repair and hair growth. However, for water to be useful, it must be distributed properly between the bloodstream, the space surrounding cells and the cells themselves.
Why drinking more water may not solve dehydration
When blood glucose is persistently elevated, glucose increases the osmotic pull within the extracellular fluid. This means water is drawn out of cells and back into the circulation.
This means someone may be drinking regularly but still experience poor cellular hydration, increased thirst, frequent urination, dry skin or a dry, uncomfortable scalp. The issue is not simply a lack of water entering the body. It is that water is not being retained and distributed effectively.
Persistently elevated cortisol may also disrupt fluid balance. Cortisol can influence blood-glucose regulation, sodium handling and water retention, contributing to a situation in which fluid is held in the wrong compartments. The result may be an uncomfortable combination of thirst, dry skin and poor cellular hydration although you are drinking plenty of water.
What does this mean for the scalp?
The scalp relies on water within its outer layers to remain flexible, support normal cell turnover and maintain an effective barrier. When hydration levels are low, the scalp may become tight, rough, flaky, itchy or sensitive.
A weakened barrier also allows irritants and microbial products to penetrate more easily, increasing the likelihood of inflammation. Once the scalp becomes inflamed, water loss will increase further, creating a cycle of dryness, irritation and barrier damage.
What actually supports healthy hydration?
Healthy hydration depends on more than drinking water. It also requires:
